Artwork Appreciation
CHOU Ching-Hui is a photographer. In Wild Aspirations – The Yellow Sheep River Project, the artist has collected vast amounts of illustrations about computers from children from Yellow Sheep River of China’s Gansu Province, and using these illustrations as a component to complete his photographic compositions. In this work, CHOU Ching-Hui has taken three different photographs of the same child to convey the relationships of the photographer and the photographed, the recorder and the recorded, as well as the narrator and the narrated. These three photographs show the portrait of the child looking into his eyes, the child holding a rooster and screaming at the skies, and a half-body portrait of the child standing upright while wearing an innocent expression. By using these photographs, CHOU Ching-Hui hopes to communicate the anxiety and vulnerability experienced by the child behind his innocent expressions and the incongruence between our ideals and the actual world.
