Artwork Appreciation
Since the 1990s, CHOU Ching-Hui has been using photography to capture special groups of people living in the modern society. Animal Farm: Life Boundary Frame Series I shows the beautiful lady of the household locking herself in a luxurious bathroom covered entirely in depressing, deep blue tones from the floors to the walls. The lady seated on the toilet, brooding with dark and sorrowful thoughts. The other two photographs depict the same lady clad in a rich-looking cheongsam studying a paler version of herself dressed in dull white-colored clothing who is seated upon a therapy chair, suggesting a schizophrenic mental state and a depression that could not be dispelled with material riches. The image of the psychiatrist, blurred behind the sanded glass window, depicts the powerlessness of medical sciences when it comes to mental issues like this. CHOU Ching-Hui has once again created an absurd and awkward modern dyspotia by creating a surreal and theatrical zoo-like scenery.
