Artwork Appreciation
IAO Yu-An uses his own physical and mental status as an inspiration to portray various phenomenon in modern civilizations and societies and highlight the complexities and difficulties of interpersonal relationships. His works are inspired by pop art, animation, and comic and are characterized by exaggerated body language and two-dimensional symbols. On-the-Spot Vacation Mode Practice No. 3 shows a humanoid-animal organism lying prone on the ground, hoping to give a present yet too shy to offer it. Another animal is shown peeking at its reactions from behind the wall, hoping to get the present yet too shy to reach for it. The actions of these two figures represent the uneasy interpersonal relationships that exist between modern individuals. LIAO Yu-An dramatized his inner nervousness into over-the-top actions, creating a unique organism as a vessel of his inner self while comically emulating the awkwardness and anxiety of modern life.
