Artwork Appreciation
YUAN Goang-Ming’s Dwelling – moment III captured the serenity of the video work titled Dwelling prior to the disconcerting changes. The picture shows a once-peaceful and poetic environment of the underwater living room being completely devastated by a mighty explosion. All furnishings were blasted apart by the explosion, sending shards, fragments, dust, and gas bubbles everywhere. The aesthetic of destruction was displayed to create a link between disasters and a devastated mental state. YUAN Goang-Ming employs Heidegger’s philosophical investigation of human residence, using theatrical construction and destruction to reflect the difficulties, challenges, insecurity, and depression encountered in everyday life.
