Artwork Appreciation
The use of shapes or lines to create a sense of space and a staggered arrangement of colors, in a manner reminiscent of Op Art, is one of the creative features of the artist Lin Hsien-chun. In recent years he has focused on expressing beautiful figures formed by the refraction of light. The title of this work, Neon Clothes, refers to the colors covering the cloud. The idea is derived the iridescent clouds sometimes seen in Luodong, Yilan, and Toucheng. When clouds floating from Xueshan (Snow Mountain) meet the water vapor above the Pacific Ocean here, and are lit by the slanting afternoon sunlight, they are lined  with glowing rainbow colors. The artist evenly covers the clouds with rainbow-colored lines that simulate the diffuse light of the afternoon. When viewing the work, there will be a first “astigmatic” and “out-of-focus” impression, but the lines make it seem that the cloud’s color is changed, and the sense of space also becomes richer. Lin hopes to use the painting to guide viewers back to the original space, and to pay attention to visual experiences that are difficult for cameras to record.
