Artwork Appreciation
SHIEH Hong-Juin’s creations are deeply embedded with personal experience and serve as an intimate and in-depth investigation of life in the modern era. Senior’s Wallflower IV is a work based on indoor patterns of flowers and vines based upon the 19th century short novel The Yellow Wall-Paper 1982 by Charlotte Perkins Gilmand. Wallpaper and decorative patterns on home textiles were transformed into abstract lines on the canvas that symbolize the environment in which women live in. The grayish dimension exudes a depressing atmosphere and symbolizes energy that emerges under restricted environments while demonstrating the innate female nature for resisting patriarchy. SHIEH Hong-Juin’s works incorporate the delicate, resilient, and tolerant elements unique to female artists, and serve as an in-depth and personal reflection of life itself.
