Artist Liu Yao-Chung’s work Urban Landscape draws inspiration from street scenes he photographed in Tokyo. He first analyzed the building outlines in the photograph using graphic software, then traced windows and structures according to coordinates before coloring them, creating a cold, precise urban visual experience. In the center of the painting, a small plane flies across the sky, with a banner hanging from its tail reading, “What Would Tyler Durden Do?” This work was inspired by The Fight Club, a film depicting the interplay between modern capitalism and schizophrenia. The schizophrenic protagonist ultimately seeks self-liberation by blowing up the city’s financial towers. Combining real-life bustling urban scenes with images suggestive of terrorist attacks, Liu Yao-Chung depicts the sense of powerlessness and destructive thoughts engendered by the immense economic pressures of modern life, prompting viewers to reflect on the social issues hidden beneath the surface of prosperity.
