Artist Liu Yao-Chung describes his artworks as a form of writing, where the creative process involves using rhetorical techniques such as analogies, metaphors, and so on, to find the best combination of objects, representations, and concepts draw from daily life experience. This painting was created when Liu came across a photos of Matisse’s studio, which featured a large, vibrant split-leaf philodendron. The leaves reminded him of the cymbals on a jazz drum set, prompting him to depict a jazz drum set placed in front of the popular indoor house plants. By contrasting these elements, Liu highlights the structural connections among leaves, veins, cymbals, and drum stands, offering a new interpretation of these forms.
