LIU Yao-Chung’s works are often combinations of graphics and texts that transform the traditional interpretations we have of these visual icons and words. Mountaineer depicts a small figure wearing red clothing at the center of the canvas. The figure is displaying an SOS signal with both of his hands in the air while standing atop a precipitous mountain peak. The entire surroundings are wholly covered by a dense black shade which further entraps him to his precarious state and position. Despite the work being titled as Mountaineer, the artist has decided to show an alternative scene, creating a new interpretation of the title by the contents of the artwork. LIU Yao-Chung has deliberately depicted the mountain in a toy-like fashion to criticize human operations as well as the contradictory psychology observed among some extreme mountaineers.
