The work Koxinga Lauloi 1646–1661 belongs to artist Deng Wen-Jen’s “Kinmen” series, which focuses on historical figures. Deng Wen-Jen, a map enthusiast, first combed through local historical and cultural materials, comparing ancient maps with modern ones, and transforming culturally significant events into visual material. Next, she meticulously depicted the historical events of Koxinga’s construction of warships in the Liaoluo (Lauloi) region at the foot of Mount Taiwu, which depleted the surrounding forests, through indigo dyeing and embroidery techniques. Using diverse materials such as buttons, hemp rope, weaving yarn, and cotton thread, the artist transcends the framework of disparate materials and enhances the sense of depth in the painting. Deng, who is of plains native (Pingpu) descent, begins with a land-focused perspective and focuses on the changes caused by humans on this land, in order to interpret the local historical stories of Kinmen.
