作品賞析
Artist Deng Wen-Jen, who studied in France, has been trying to combine natural dyeing and embroidery to create art in recent years. Her “Warli Land” series derives from what she saw and heard when she was stationed in a village in India, and it outlines the relationship between the indigenous Warli people and the land in their daily lives. In Warli murals, circles, triangles, and squares are symbols for the living things around them. For instance, two triangles with their tips touching each other represent humans or animals. Deng Wen-Jen uses this image in Warli Land—Summer, in which one can see the Warli living on the coast, casting nets and catching many fish, and on the other side, there is a large Bengal tiger made of old red cloth. The tiger symbolizes strengths and bravery and is deeply respected by the Warli. By combining many kinds of media, including linen thread and old Indian cloth, the artist’s observations of Warli culture are reflected.
