作品賞析
The inspiration for artist Deng Wen-Jen’s “Warli Land” series came from her experiences during her residency in India in 2019. She observed that the Warlis, the indigenous people of the area, draw circles, triangles, and squares on the walls of their houses as expressions of daily life and observations of nature. With this as creative inspiration, she used textiles with different textures, such as cotton, linen, and various Indian fabrics, to embroider the Warli people’s customs in each of the four seasons as illustrations of their relationship with the land. Spring is the beginning of the year, and the season for planting. On the left half of this work, Deng used old cloth purchased in India to stitch together an image of a peacock with its tail spread open, which is a sacred, auspicious symbol. On the right half, we see the Warli people picking coconuts, farming, cooking, and so on. Through her needlework, the Warli people’s nature-worshiping, prosperous, and joyful life is revealed.
