作品賞析
Jincheng 803-1945, part of artist Deng Wen-Jen’s “Kinmen” series, features the theme of “human settlements.” A map enthusiast, Deng used burlap sacks, combined with various embroidery and cotton threads, to reconstruct the landscape of Kinmen Island between 803 and 1945. In her mind, burlap sacks, frequently used to carry goods, symbolize migration. She dyed the burlap using indigo dyeing techniques and embroidered image of the Zhushan settlement, depicting Hokkien architecture, on the right side of the composition. The gray embroidery on the lower half of the town wall is based on ancient architectural features; the white horse represents the horse-raising sites of the Tang dynasty. To assemble this cultural landscape of Jinmen, Deng Wen-Jen combed through local cultural and historical materials, compared ancient maps with modern maps, and extracted culturally significant events and notable historic buildings such as Deyue Tower.
