Artist Yang Yi Shiang’s work is a record of daily life. After becoming a mother, she has drawn inspiration from the growth of her children and the emotional transitions of motherhood. She skillfully weaves together state of mind, imagination, and reality, allowing viewers to experience the subtle yet profound emotions of life. Her work Caregiver uses her usual delicate brushstrokes to depict the touching moments of a mother’s daily observations of her child. In the painting, one child is wearing a rabbit mask and the other is wearing a fox mask, symbolizing that the children regard themselves as animals and coexist with animals on an equal footing. The bright richly red light source on the left represents the energy core—full of love and care— within the children’s hearts, which shelter the animals from wind and rain. The patterns above the background and the dripping paint create a mottled feeling, as if they are traces left inadvertently on the journey of life, accumulating over time and becoming a part of life.
