Do you see what this colorful picture in front of you depicts? Taipei’s homes are relatively small, so people often hang potted plants like cradles on their iron-grilled windows and grow them. Artist Zeng Lin-Yuan, who is good at depicting quotidian scenes, painted this work of orchids hanging on the grilled window and titled it Lullaby of Corner. She painted the canvas with primary colors, then covered large areas with white paint to create a hazy atmosphere evoking memories of a certain time. In Zeng Lin-Yuan’s thinking, orchids represent vitality. She feels that the aerial roots of the orchids in the painting intersect with the lines of the window grills. She uses bright splashes of color to convey key focuses, and then glazes the acrylic paint to make it bulge out. The abstracted lines running through the composition bring out a sense of spatial depth, so that viewers will temporarily be unable to determine whether they are viewing a scene from reality or a dream.
