In early 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic quickly swept across the world, the world seemed to stop, but now when we look back, it all seems like a dream. Artist Hsu Pei-Cheng was thus inspired to create a foggy maze symbolizing the world of the pandemic. The maze is full of windows and passages, but it is impossible to find the exit, and time seems to stand still. He used rootless flowers, caves, faceless figures, and fluttering butterflies to express the sense of stagnant floating in the dream, as well as the sense of uncertainty and confusion about the future. When Hsu Pei-Cheng was growing up, he was surrounded by ancient Chinese cultural relics, thangka art, ukiyo-e, and so on. Throughout his education, he specialized in art, particularly Western-style paintings. Therefore, he cleverly combines the Western media of oil and acrylic with Eastern ink and color to form a distinctive artistic style, making his works full of the traces of cultural blending.
