HSU Pei-Cheng is skilled in using visual languages filled with storytelling elements and metaphors when creating his personal and spiritual kingdom. He believes that everyone’s life began as a lonely island that eventually forms both tangible and intangible connections with other islands and weaves snippets of tales with other people, nature, time, and memories. Redemption of Damage shows several islands of different colors with root-like structures forming tight knots with each other. A unicorn stands alone in the center of the composition surrounded by a shriveled forest where the trees have been reduced to withered trunks. Most of the other trees have been cut down and have lost their vitality. The presence of the unicorn serves as a rejuvenating force to the world depicted in the artwork, using the power of a butterfly’s metamorphosis to grant new life to the dead trees. HSU Pei-Cheng has attempted to use this picture to communicate the relationship between individuals and point towards the inseparable and intimate meetings in life.
