HSU Pei-Cheng utilized imaginary park spaces to build a connection to the viewers’ memories and as a means to convey personal feelings. About that Staircase in the Backyard is part of the Park Series. The park, being a public space, is also a connotation for history and memory. The color blocks with a range of different tones, whether applied horizontally or vertically, portray an abstract space that was taken apart and re-assembled. Long, rectangular blocks evoke memories of park fences. The circular spots of different colors, on the other hand, represent the different park sceneries. A jumble of intertwining lines located on the top part of the composition seems to serve as a projection of personal thought.
