For artist Liang Yu-Ning, plants are a neutral painting subject. One can either simply depict leaves, or bring in one’s own ideas and present an image of leaves through an accumulation of brush strokes. At the same time, since plants are also related to his personal life, they can be freely developed as a theme. Growing plants inevitably attracts a variety of insects. One night a nocturnal cutworm ate the plants he had carefully cultivated, and only the veins of the leaves were left. This led Liang Yu-Ning to create his work, The Love Bites It Left. The irregular red graphics symbolize the “love bites” left by the insects. A gradual magnification effect is used to reinterpret the change from green to dark green between the veins and leaf surfaces, and the faint halo around the leaves symbolizes to the artist the distress signal sent out by the plant.
