Artist Hu Chau-Tsung believes that for a place to become someone’s residence, there is a kind of process. In his “Becoming a Place to Be” series, he captures urban or suburban scenes from his own memories and combines them with plant images in order to describe the process by which people gradually develop a sense of belonging to a place and making it a place to live. Plants like the Swiss cheese plant and staghorn ferns have been popular house plants in recent years, and in these works they serve as the artist’s self-projection. Images such as steel plate houses, asphalt roads, grasslands, and lakes are taken from places that Hu Chau-Tsung once visited. The Jersey barrier in the picture carries a hint of “an environment that is about to change,” and the irregular color blocks that look like both a wall and the sky create a sense of liveliness. Hu Chau-Tsung uses bright blue and fluorescent colors on the plant leaves to create a bright and pleasant atmosphere for the overall composition.
