The starting point of Dining Table is a small card from a bento shop. In artist Lin Yi-Hsuan’s experience, the bento box holds the most basic food that ordinary people consume and fill their stomachs. Eating from bento boxes while watching TV news is also a daily dining habit for many people. However, like fast-produced images on a screen, most of the dishes served by bento stores use the same ingredients in different combinations. They quickly provide today’s people with a solution to one of life’s basic needs, and while people are accustomed to deriving short-term happiness and physical satisfaction from them, they do not anticipate having to pay a health price for it one day. Lin Yi-Hsuan extracted a large number of TV news-related materials and real bento box menus, blurred and deconstructed the images, and then reassembled them into a lumpy organism, thereby re-imbuing the images with materiality and painterliness.
