In Canyon, artist Lin Yi- Hsuan attempts to explore how people today are generally manipulated by big data. The beautiful, majestic scenery of the Grand Canyon and its high number of visitors remind Lin Yi-Hsuan of people’s excessive pursuit of “traffic” in the Internet age. In the new era of social media especially, the influence of “traffic” numbers has replaced personal judgment and even become a kind of belief. Canyon’s composition consists of blue sky, a white mountain wall, and black ground. On the huge mountain face, the existence of numbers 0 and 1 is vaguely revealed, implying that the world is constructed by data. There are also some vague, subtle images in the composition, including a collage of Christian icons, circuit boards, and symbols of death, pointing to the relationship between technology and religion. It makes the viewer reflect on the blind worship of the tech industry in Taiwanese society.
