Artist Wang Guan-Jhen’s creative approach is dynamic and improvisational. She directly transforms the words she imagines in her mind into images, without being restricted by composition or actual people or things, and makes instant adjustments as the work develops. Use of color is linked to the emotional state of the figures in the painting, expressed through color contrast and changes in depth. Through the creative process, Wang tries to rediscover the feelings she has had while playing. The inspiration for this work, Pocket, comes from the swing, a common playground facility in parks. As one of the two girls in the painting swings, the relationship between her and the other, along with their power dynamic, seems to find a balance. The girl in the light green dress is very close to the swing, and the way her hands are inserted into her pockets unconsciously suggests a semicircular motion opposite to that of the forward swinging movement of the girl on the swing. Although both girls’ expressions are calm, neither can predict the other’s next move, creating a sense of so hidden uncertainty and tension.
