For artist Wu Chien-Yi, Taipei’s “Seventh Alley” is a mixture of Taiwanese and Japanese cultural elements. Walking into the alleys, one feels as if time has stood still. She chose to use different kinds of tape as the medium for capturing the visual impression of natural light and street lights flowing through the alleys of the place. These three window scenes record the same scene at three different times. In the one with black iron window grille, the morning light makes the glass of the old shophouse bright and clear; in the one with blue window grille, the window frame is printed a fiery red by the sun, and the drinks on the sill decorated with golden yellow look cool and refreshing; in the one with the brown window grille, three wine bottles are evidence of tipsy, stress-relieving moments at night. Wu Chien-Yi made a special effort to find the unique decorative window stickers that produce the stained-glass effect, which are common to the shophouses on Seventh Alley. The old-fashioned patterns evoke a sense of déjà vu. Light and shadow may flow between the window scenes, but time has frozen in our memories.
