作品賞析
In 2018, when the artist Wu Chien-Yi discovered the “Xinwei Market,” built in the basement of a large old public housing compound in prosperous Da’an District for disaster prevention and evacuation, she walked into the dark market and explored the old shops one by one, as well as the memories they carried. Forgotten Land I, II, and III, a set of three small works, record this lonely place being overwhelmed by time. Each work has its own unique windowpane symbol, set off by black and dark brown backgrounds, and a symbolic image pieced together from Japanese paper masking tape. The brown spiral staircase, blue mesh baskets, plants with new leaves, the feral cats and fish staring at the viewer, and the messy stacks of bottles, jars, and vegetables all hint at the vitality still existing in the old market. Wu Chien-Yi reorganized the space through paper tape to create an interface full of retro memories, and the codes she created carry the collective memories of Taiwanese people.
