During the period of Japanese rule, many Japanese people lived on Taipei’s Linsen North Road, and tiaotong was originally a general name for a street in Japanese, but in modern times it symbolizes nightlife and wild spending. For this work, Land of Legacy: Sanjō Street, Wu Chien-Yi made these richly storied streets and alleyways her subject. By applying the collage and cutting washi tape to create the plants, bonsai, and so on, she brought out the mysterious spaces behind evening windows. She painted the oil over the washi tape to create the pattern of old-fashioned iron-barred windows. Through layer-by-layer pasting and the mixing of different media, she brings a fresh new sense of layering and space to the composition. Wu believes that even though washi tape is a new modern medium, it can meet the need to create collage quickly, enhance the richness of expression, and heighten the feeling of contemporaneity.
