Artist Tsai Wei-Ting believes that images can produce a huge narrative system and can also be regarded as a kind of vocabulary. His work, Confessions after 99 Spins depicts a man and woman sitting on a carousel. In the background, a blue castle can be seen indistinctly against a dark night sky. Resplendent lighting embellishes the dark night in a picturesque manner. The fortuniana rose is a flower that blooms in late spring and early summer. It has the connotation of “the beauty of the end,” and the artist transformed it into a symbol that metaphorically refers to “separation.” In this painting, the fortuniana rose is being held in the woman’s hand, so the carousel going around and around implies that this love affair will eventually end in tragedy. Tsai Wei-Ting uses large amounts of mixed oil to dilute his oil paints. The rendering of the oil then has an unexpectedly mottled effect, making his works quite recognizable. The painting combines techniques such as linearity, freehand brushwork, thin application, and sfumato. Human figures and scenes appear blurred in this painting, just like images that have settled into memory. Thinking occasionally of lost loves will still make people feel the heartbreak.
