The artist Tsai Wei-Ting has said, “Every moment in life is like a fragment of a story, and everything around us seems to appear as if in a play.” This is the perspective from which he sees and interprets the world. He compiles his perceptions into scripts that he builds into paintings. A Heart-to-Heart after Work depicts the interaction between a pair of lovers after they get off work. Intricate branches and leaves block the view, but on the left side of the painting, one can vaguely see a man lying relaxed, which his hands stretched out, as if wanting to hug the woman sitting opposite him on the right side of the painting. It would be an intimate scene if not for several blooming blackberry roses between the two, symbolizing that the romance is a thing of the past. Tsai Wei-Ting uses polished textures to express the atmosphere of mottled memories. From the delicately rendered brushstrokes in the woman’s bun and the fine lines of the branches and leaves, we can faintly see the charm of traditional ink painting, while the low-chroma tones suggest past feelings and condolences.
