Artist Yeh Yu-Jhu’s “Memories in the House” series mainly depicts the subtle feelings and sensations she felt during her childhood, and the way she remembers how she had observed herself. In The Memories in the House II, we see her old bedroom and a bathroom. The daily necessities scattered here and there represent an accumulation of her memories. She tried to use color to distinguish scenes representing home from items with personal memories, so that the geometric floor tiles and terrazzo bathtub are expressed in darker colors, while badminton rackets, indoor slippers, dolls, and washboards are presented in lighter hues, with a slightly hazy halo. For her, the “family house” is a place that carries the emotional bonds among family members, and by depicting past memories and reconstructing the place from memory, she hopes to resonate with viewers who have similar memories.
