Daydream in the House I is the first of a series of works by artist Yeh Yu-Jhu. The paintings belonging to this series can also be spliced together to form a long scroll, or they can be viewed independently. Using her memories, she recreated the home she lived in as a child. Daydream in the House I is composed of two wooden panels of the same size and depict the atrium, kitchen, and the transitional area between them. She used the diffuse perspective of traditional ink painting to compose the image, allowing the viewer to freely move around in it, and its continuity even extends to the left and right. The atrium on the left half, however, is also like a swimming pool, with swimming rings, a warning sign, and so on. Why? The artist remembered how her home was once flooded, so she converted the scene into a humorous one that evaporates the uneasiness and anxiety that had once existed there. In this way, Yeh Yu-Jhu inserts bizarre elements into scenes of calm daily life, thus forming a kind of alternative realism.
