The artist Lai Wei-Yu often recalls his childhood traumas through his works, as if to find solace for the past pain of not being accepted or understood. In On the Meadow, we see the kind of black-and-white world the boy lives in. The clouds in the gray sky, the wavy clouds, and the black dogs jumping over the grass create a sense of rhythm. As the boy lies on the lush grass, his head and body are strangely and incongruously tilted back. Meanwhile, the grass on both sides continues to grow upwards and extends into the distance, so there is an up-and-down visual effect, which makes the boy’s body seem to be falling. Lai Wei-Yu has said that the black dogs and the boy in the painting are his incarnations. One implies the sadness and uncertainty of life, while the other is forever alone, waiting for someone to make way through the grass and find him.
