作品賞析
Lai Wei-yu is very moved by the mixed relationship of violence and love, and feels that violence and pleasure seem to be the same thing on a certain level. In Strike His Balloon, two persons of uncertain age and gender, and with blurred facial features, are wrestling on what at first may seem to be a grassy field, but on closer examination seems to be a mass of shimmering, tentacled life forms. He uses soft, rounded lines to weaken the sense of violence between the tussling figures, and skillfully uses the charcoal to create a contrast between light-gray areas and areas as black as a black hole, which highlights the concept that “violence and joy are clearly opposites, but with a vague area between them.” The sharp black-and-white contrasts, rounded forms, and deliberately blurred figures give the work an indistinct visual sense, like something excavated from memory, dreamy yet real.
