The Magic of the Triangle was created by Lee Yen-Jen when she was an artist-in-residence in Kanazawa, Japan. The main body of the picture is a view of the scenery looking down from the artists’ residence. She meticulously reproduced the scene when natural light penetrated through the clouds, fog, and snow, and she used gold powder to bring a faint shimmering luster to the composition. Intaglio printing can record delicate lines, which she uses to frame the landscape in an irregular geometric shape and divide it with three sets of lines diverging from three points above. These three sets of lines descending from the sky seem to derive from the unique Japanese technique known as yukitsuri. Yukitsuri is a gardening method in which ropes are tied to the tops of trees in winter, in order to prevent their branches from being broken by ice and snow. The conical forms have thus become a special feature of Japanese garden scenery. Lee Yen-Jen creatively and ingeniously forms a stable composition with the yukitsuri outlines matching the mysterious pyramid on the ground near the artists’ residence.
