LEE Yen-Jen uses panel art as a creative media, and spent many years creating works that focus on the interactive relationships between the self and the surrounding environment. “Absent” is inspired by the Rubber Duck of Hofman that initiated a rave in the 2013 Taiwan display. During its exhibit in the Port of Keelung, Rubber Duck attracted a huge crowd of art pilgrims and led to a plethora of imitation merchandise and souvenirs. LEE Yen-Jen reflected upon the ridiculous nature of such cultural activities to ask these questions: What are the people looking at? Are they going after trends or do they really care about art? What does the audience gain after leaving? In a landscape painting of an artificial swimming pool, the artist has arranged for an appearance of a floating rubber duck presented against a backdrop of isolated emptiness, allowing us to reflect upon the nature of popular fads and trends.
