LEE Yen-Jen transforms landscapes from daily encounters to panel painting sceneries to project personal emotions and imaginations. Dear Mr. Zebra shows an irregular geometric frame and a fragment of a landscape. The foreground is stacked with hills of different sizes and textures while a transparent girl hides in the background. The background features an artificial circular pond with an island in the middle upon which a wilted tree stands alone, while a tiny form of a zebra is shown blending in with the island. The sense of distant isolation serves as an analogy to the deepest recesses in everyone’s hearts. LEE Yen-Jen uses the intricate nature of etchings and artistic elements inspired by the artificial landscaping of Ba-Ian area in Jinshan, building upon nature and generating a work that inspires us to think about interpersonal emotions and relationships.
