Artist Kang Ya-Chu’s creative themes relate mostly to the natural environment and life issues, while her works feature rare “paper fibers” and self-created weaving techniques. This tetraptych at first glance looks like a series of black-and-white photos of a pine tree silhouette, but they are actually pictures made of “paper fibers.” Based on the photos she took of tree silhouettes in Taiwan’s high-altitude forest, she transformed these into sketches, then arranged the “paper fibers” in the composition in a way that created quasi-woven structures that achieved a sketch-like pictorial effect. Directionality of the paper thread arrangement followed the artist’s whim. The shape of the fiber cleverly simulates the growth of pine needles in nature, from the tree to the pulp, then from the pulp to the paper fiber, before it finally becomes a pine shadow. Light and shadow are densely intertwined, and the weaving process includes not only the cycles of things but also the accumulated experience from the artist’s own life.
