Artist Kang Ya-Chu expresses his concerns about health, society and gender through fabric. Having lived overseas for many years, Kang examines the differences between national and cultural identities in his art. The male figures in Heroic Bearing series 2 -1.2.7.8 are superheroes, exhibiting courage and ferocity. Kang’s majestic, heroic figures are made from comic strip paper, while the magnificent, flowing capes they wear are fashioned out of colorful print fabrics. The contrast between these materials gives a pliability and robustness to the figures’ virile, muscular lines. By mixing colorful fabrics with printed paper from superhero comics, the artist touches upon the relationship between gender and society, and creates a metaphor for the indefinite state of the position of Western power, identity and culture amid globalization.
