KANG Ya-Chu’s Hero Rescues Beauty investigates identity, gender, and the differences in east and west countries. Newspapers, comic pages, printed fabrics, and other materials were used as the creative foundation depicting curvaceous women from fashion magazines as well as muscular superheroes. The superheroes wear capes that resemble national flags like the ones appeared in Hollywood movies to promote national prestige. The characters are also depicted in a theatrical manner in an attempt to tell a story and real-life experience. KANG Ya-Chu uses everyday items and materials from western and eastern cultures to explore social value systems, gender relations as well as personal and cultural identities in the context of globalization.
