The artist Lin Yi-Pei has long focused on capturing subtle emotions, including the beginnings and endings of various relationships. The living things, such as plants, often appear in her works, providing space for the viewers’ self-projection into them. In this work, only the square area in the center preserves the color—the two sides, where time seems quietly frozen, are kept black and white. Old shoes represent time after wear and tear, and the act of tying shoelaces suggests that a new journey is about to begin. It suggests the feeling that occurs after an intimate relationship ends, and one must start again. The lush plants symbolize time’s never-ending progression. If we look closely, we can  see that the shoelaces are made of grass—an expectation of prospering with the environment, a product of living and seeking survival. The work presents emotional fragility and insecurity, but retains a touch of warmth, and the overall atmosphere is distinctly delicate.
