LIN Yi-Pei’s Jack and His Magic Beans shows a man against a monotonous background with two thin cacti growing from his eyes, a mysterious plant sprouting from his mouth, and beetles crawling on his face. LIN Yi-Pei is personally afraid of insects, but her works always portray these creatures with incredible levels of detail. The artist chooses to fight against her inner darkness by manifesting her fears in the form of an artwork. The beetles resemble another form of self, allowing the artist to temporarily metamorphosize into its exoskeletal form and coexist with her true nature. Perhaps changing into a bettle is the perfect solution by which we can identify ourselves in this imperfect world.
