Huang Yen-Hsun compares his creative work to “playing in a sandbox”—you can freely create anything in a virtual space. In his artworks, he builds imaginary worlds and freely designs and places the things in them. In A Landscape, a space traveler uses an on-the-shoulder projection device to project a vivid, verdant landscape in a contrastingly vast, dark, mysterious, and barren wilderness. In this painting, the artist deliberately emphasizes the darkness of the environment, which contrasts with the cool light projected on the screen; the viewer has a bird’s-eye view of the vast scene from well over and behind the space traveler’s shoulder. It suggests the common science-fiction scenario of human beings traveling to other worlds in order to find bits of rare and auspicious signs of nature.
