Artist Lee Ming-Hsing works mainly in photography, recording certain moments and scenes through the lens to express his emotions about people and things. His Go Out Bravely is a set of four photos, all scenes from a river bank. The towering levee obscures one’s line of sight beyond it, so that one does not know what is on the other side. However, when you cross over the levee and look back to the scene between the levees on each bank, you realize that you had been confined among the things there. Originally, what had been invisible scenery had included yourself. With this work, the artist expresses the idea that unless you “go out bravely,” you will never be sure whether you are living in a Truman Show world, without any self-awareness. Unless you “go out bravely,” you will prevent yourself from becoming like a bit of floating duckweed, bound to a prefixed set of values.
