作品賞析
In the fantasy world of Lin Wei-Cheng’s Yunlong (meaning “Cloud Dragon”), the shape of the cloud dragon can be completely free and unrestricted, which lets him create boldly at will. When conceiving this work in 2018, he drew inspiration from mythology and the Classic of Mountains and Seas, and he deliberately discarded the traditional image of the dragon that one usually finds in Chinese art. It is said that the dragon rules the clouds and mists and can call forth the wind and rain or ride on clouds and fog. Lin Wei-Cheng thus replaces the dragon’s scales with curling cloud patterns to emphasize this aspect of the dragon’s divinity. In the ribbon of blue-green below it, there are waves that also symbolize the energy of the clouds, and the dragon above is coiled like an reversed “S” shape, full of momentum and boldness. Lin also outlines the yunlong’s appearance with a geometric concatenation of lines, and it is further set off with a bright blue background which makes the entire composition highly decorative. Interpretation of the yunlong’s physical structure and personality is left to the viewer. When we stand before it, its eyes are watching us, as if calling us to enter into a dialogue with it.
