The artist Sung Hsi-Te is adept at handling metals. His experience as an artist-in-residence with Tung Ho Steel Enterprise gave him a profound appreciation for the beauty and huge amount of energy contained in steel. When the high temperature penetrates and continues to accumulate inside the steel, it turns into hot molten iron full of energy, and the traces of rapid melting produce patterns like those produced by the squeezing of the earth, and it becomes like running water. For Sung, the high temperature lets the steel, which represents industrial civilization, return to its most primitive materiality and connect with nature. In his “Landscape Series,” he makes full use of the characteristics of metal materials to change color and form under high temperature. By adopting the visual language of abstract expression and using the combination of stainless steel and regular steel, he gives shape to a magical landscape image embodying the metaphysical spirituality of the East.
