SUNG Hsi-Te’s sculptures ponder the connection between metal and local culture. He creates the rich imagery of mountains, rivers, and island topography using the unique characteristics of various colors and shape changes produced by metals under physical principles such as high temperature and flame. In the work, Landscape Monotype-3, the originally chilly and heavy steel is remade into a magnificent natural landscape. The cooling of the steel after exposing to high temperature forms the structure of the color and flow of a rich landscape much like steep mountains, caves and rocks. The top part symbolizes the roughness and primitivity of the mountain stone while the bottom lake-like metal symbolizes brightness and coldness. SUNG Hsi-Te cleverly demonstrates the plasticity of steel and gives steel its abundant literature energy and insight.
