WANG Da-Jen often uses public facility that seems to have been abandoned as his subject. The work, Basketball Court, presents a scene of a basketball court on the bank of a river. The place seems to have been forgotten for a very long time. The rich gray tone of the brushstroke creates the black and white contrast of the picture. The centered basketball frame and the marked lines on the ground form a quiet tension. The whole picture is filled with a desolate and alienating atmosphere. The river embankment, which is built high with cement, seems to isolate the different virtual and real worlds, making one can't help but wonder about the scenery behind the river embankment and what the original landscape was like before being covered by cement. WANG Da-Jen tells the story behind ordinary people and objects with a man-made public facility.
