WANG Da-Jen’s oil paintings focus on abandoned public areas, generating views that appear like cold, unfeeling photographs with a sense of distance to highlight the isolation and allow people to achieve mental and spiritual peace as well as personal reflection. Flood Channels illustrates a set of old storm drain discharge pipes within a lake using dark, uniform color tones. The overgrown reeds and grasses surrounding the pipes add to the alienation and loneliness of the human construct and accentuates the sense of abandonment and isolation. Construction established in response to human wants is often quickly abandoned and left to crumble on its own. WANG Da-Jen uses artwork as a silent reflection of cultural violence generated by a profit-driven society.
