WANG Da-Jen’s oil paintings focus on abandoned public areas, generating views that appear like cold, unfeeling photographs with a sense of distance to highlight the isolation and allow people to achieve mental and spiritual peace as well as personal reflection. Ice Rink Circle depicts an outdoor skating rink commonly seen in a park in dark, uniform color tones. The straight, concrete lined path and circular rink are artificial constructs in the area, and appear like enigmatic and isolated crop circles surrounded by natural elements when viewed from up high. Construction established in response to human wants is often quickly abandoned and left to crumble on its own. WANG Da-Jen uses artwork as a silent reflection of cultural violence generated by a profit-driven society.
