YEN Pei-Shan’s works are based upon personal experience and emotions and convey the relationship between inner self and external individuals, events, and objects. Soul Out uses subsumed colors to portray what seems to be like a deserted delta. Several oddly shaped and overlapping human forms created using only lines were shown, resembling spirits that lack a physical body. Red paint sprinkled on the bodies of these individuals serve as a metaphor for aggression and injuries. Soul Out is based on a term related to folk belief and refers to the act of a soul taking over the physical body of another. This work is an attempt by YEN Pei-Shan to convey the confusing relationships that exist between an individual, other people, and society.
