YU Ya-lan uses panel art as her main creative medium, generating works that focus on interpersonal emotions that cannot be conveyed by words. Woodblock printing is her medium of choice as it could convey the warmth of the work. The very process of engraving the woodblock condenses the memories and emotional state at the time of the event. “Shrubbery” depicts fireflies flying everywhere in a summer night from the artist’s memories. The composition is a dreamlike scene of a lakeside locale in the evening. Thick shrubs grow by the side of the lake while fireflies dart about in the air, emitting faint flashes of light. YU Ya-Lan creates and remembers landscapes that relate to her emotions and connects to her inner sensations.
